Wednesday Wisdom: Demystifying Feminism
The experiences and tasks of Filipino women in various historical periods illustrated the character of the times and defined the essence of their struggle.
At the dawn of a new government and in the current conditions, feminism and the women's movement in the Philippines continue to face new challenges. In order to maintain the status quo, the goal is to persevere and adapt to these changes to sustain the fight for women's rights to independence, equality, and social justice.
Nowadays, we all live in a world where society labels women as the ‘weaker’ ones. A lot of people are still rooted on the belief that a woman should just stay at home, cook meals, wash dishes, or fold clothes. For that reason and endless more, one must stand with women, and their rights should be implicated and respected without biases. Therefore, with feminism, women’s rights are emphasized since these are given little to no attention. Women from all over the world should be treated fairly, just as men, and just like a natural human being.
Throughout history, we have made huge strides in empowering women, and we continue to demonstrate that we are entitled to the same resources and influences as men. Regardless of all that has been said and done; we are unfortunately still in war against sexism, bigotry, and misogyny which are deeply ingrained in our own culture and in society as a whole. It is a somber fact that we all know our very own Gabriela Silang did not fight on a battlefield, and Melchora Aquino did not demonstrate the power of women in a revolution, only to be continuously discriminated against and ordered to sit down or return to the kitchen generation after generation.
